Shaheed Ashfaq Majeed Wani also called as "FRENA" was born on 5th September 1966. A local of Sarai Balla had a very good vision and was the best example for his kindness. He had studied in valley's prestegious school Tyndale Biscoe and latter went to SP College for further studies. A very good sportsman in fact the famous althlete of the valley. He was attached to the struggle from his teen age.
He was an activist before going for the arms. In 1989 he crossed the LOC for arms training and took the armed struggle to its new heights. He was the core member of the HAJY Group. An Area Commander of JKLF was very known for his gureilla tactits.The ongoing freedom struggle in strife-torn Kashmir suffered a major reverse on 30 March 1990 when Ashfaq Majeed Wani was martyred in an encounter with the paramilitary forces in the old city. The incident took place when the Mujahids attacked a BSF camp near Hawal. Twenty Five year old Ashfaq, who was leading the Mujahids was hit by two bullets, one in abdomen and the other just below his chest, when he was about to hurl a powerful grenade on that camp. As he fell down, profusely bleeding the grenade also exploded blowing off his right arm. He was laid to rest at IDD GAH Martyres graveyard. After his martyrdom, he was honoured with the SHAHEED-I-KASHMIR title. Ashfaq was and is still the inspiration for the youth of Kashmir.by : Irfan S. Kashmiri
